Stop us if you’ve heard this before, but there are some ‘establishment Republicans’ who are upset with President Donald Trump and aren’t planning on supporting him this fall.
And they’re all names you’ve heard of before: Sen. Mitt Romney, RINO-Utah; former President George W. Bush, the “compassionate conservative”; and former four-star Army Gen. Colin Powell, who was a Joint Chiefs chairman, national security adviser to President George H. W. Bush, and secretary of state under Bush 43.
As the Daily Wire reports:
In 2009, George W. Bush, just before he lifted off on Marine One from the White House, said that he wouldn’t play politics anymore.
Well, forget that.
‘Former President George W. Bush won’t support the reelection of Trump, and Jeb Bush isn’t sure how he’ll vote, say people familiar with their thinking,’ The New York Times reported on Saturday. ‘Senator Mitt Romney of Utah won’t back Trump and is deliberating whether to again write in his wife, Ann, or cast another ballot this November. And Cindy McCain, the widow of Senator John McCain, is almost certain to support Biden but is unsure how public to be about it because one of her sons is eyeing a run for office.’
The Times noted further:
‘This fall, it’s time for new leadership in this country — Republican, Democrat, or independent,’ said William H. McRaven, the retired Navy admiral who directed the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. ‘President Trump has shown he doesn’t have the qualities necessary to be a good commander in chief.’
McRaven, making his first public comments opposing Trump’s election in an interview on the 76th anniversary of D-Day, noted that those wartime leaders inspired Americans with ‘their words, their actions, and their humanity.’
In contrast, he said, Trump has failed his leadership test. ‘As we have struggled with the COVID pandemic and horrible acts of racism and injustice, this president has shown none of those qualities,’ McRaven said. ‘The country needs to move forward without him at the helm.’
Romney has become well-known for his disdain towards President Trump, which pretty much began right after Trump refused to name Romney as his secretary of state. And why did Trump pass Romney over? Could it have had something to do with a March 2016 speech Romney gave in which he denounced Trump as a “fraud?”
“Here’s what I know,’ Romney said. ‘Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University. He’s playing the American public for suckers: He gets a free ride to the White House and all we get is a lousy hat … His domestic policies would lead to recession. His foreign policies would make America and the world less safe. He has neither the temperament nor the judgment to be president. And his personal qualities would mean that America would cease to be a shining city on a hill.’
None of those predictions came true, did they?
As for Powell, well, his non-endorsement of President Trump isn’t such a surprise, given that he voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 (and let that sink in — now he wants Joe Biden). And Bush is probably still angry that Trump beat his low-energy brother, Jeb.
Will these non-endorsements hurt the president? Yeah, we don’t think so, either.
