(TNS) We aren’t sure why we didn’t think of this crime-fighting strategy long ago, but that would help explain why no one around here is a mayor of a major U.S. city.
On Tuesday, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner introduced a new law enforcement policy he expects the city’s criminals to follow during the coronavirus outbreak, in order to reduce the spread: “Chill.”
“Let me just make my plea. Until the coronavirus is resolved, criminals take a break, OK!” said Turner, implying that after the outbreak is over, it’d be okay to resume their lives of crime.
“Stay home, OK? Stay home. And don’t commit any crimes!” he added.
“And that way, they’ll stay safe and out of jail, and police officers can stay safe and go home to their families, OK?” Turner concluded. “So everybody chill! Crooks, criminals, you chill! Wait until the coronavirus is over! OK, and then we’ll all be OK!”

This not only seems reasonable but downright doable. Why didn’t the mayor introduce this strategy before? Why did it have to take a deadly virus?
Then again, Houston isn’t a hotbed of virus, either. As of this writing, the city only has about 350 confirmed cases and three deaths.
We’ll see how this works out. If it’s successful, then perhaps mayors of other major cities, especially those experiencing higher outbreak cases, can employ it.
