President Trump on Sunday said the National Guard had been activated in New York, California and Washington and that the federal government would provide additional resources to help those states combat the coronavirus, The Hill reports.
“We’re dealing also with other states. These states have been hit the hardest,” Trump said at a news briefing at the White House.
Trump said the federal government would fund “100 percent” of the National Guard units carrying out approved missions in those states. The order will provide additional manpower and resources to the three states grappling with some of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in the U.S.
The National Guard is doing exactly what they were created for in the 1st place, state emergencies, they are not to be feared and they cannot enforce or detain. A lot of rumors flying around and about the National Guard enforcing Law Enforcement orders on civilians. Let me make this as clear as I can, they cannot detain or touch a citizen in an enforcement manner. The only directive that allows such authority is the Posse Comitatis Act and that has to be declared by the President and the Senate.
Newsom said the short-term deployment will initially assist a food bank distribution warehouse in Sacramento County and will also assess the needs of other California counties that have requested assistance with their food bank programs, The La Times reports.
Please understand that the National Guard are men and women that have families and friends and they are doing what they have been called upon to do all the while they have to worry about their homes but they cannot be there with their families.
