One of President Donald Trump’s top coronavirus experts said he has recommended the administration call for a “national shutdown” in order to contain the spread of COVID-19.
During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, Dr. Antony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, urged Americans to hunker down and stay home as much as possible.
He endorsed a 14-day “national shutdown” to help slow down the virus and explained that he has brought it up with the administration, which is generally open to his ideas.
“I think Americans should be prepared that they are going to have to hunker down significantly more than we as a country are doing,” he said.
Meanwhile, on ABC’s “This Week,” the doctor noted that lockdowns helped China and South Korea more rapidly contain the spread of the virus there. He added that China has seen its outbreak level peak and new cases begin to drop, as South Korea’s outbreak has leveled off.
Fauci also said he believes that the virus outbreak in the U.S. could last weeks or even a few months.
“What we should be doing is absolutely much much different. Not business as usual. Just chill down,” he said on ABC.
