New Studies Emerge Showing How Long Covid-19 Can Remain In The Air And On Surfaces And It Is Serious

COVID-19 is a new disease and we are still learning how it spreads, the severity of illness it causes, and to what extent it may spread in the United States. Coronavirus disease 2019, also known as 2019-nCoV acute respiratory disease, and novel coronavirus pneumonia, is a viral respiratory disease, Fox News reports.

A new study suggests that the novel coronavirus COVID-19 can remain in the air for up to three hours, and live on surfaces such as plastic and stainless steel for up to three days.

The research, published in the medRxiv depository, also notes that the virus can remain on copper surfaces for four hours and carboard for up to 24 hours. The research found it could stay on stainless steel and plastic for anywhere between two and three days.

“Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of HCoV-19 is plausible, as the virus can remain viable in aerosols for multiple hours and on surfaces up to days,” the researchers wrote in the study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed.

Another study published in February concluded that if COVID-19 is similar to other coronaviruses, such as SARS or MERS, it could live on surfaces like metal, glass and plastic for up to nine days, Fox News previously reported. By comparison, the flu virus can only live on surfaces for approximately 48 hours.

We all must choose how we want to respond to the global pandemic of the virus and the response of the President of The United States.  I believe people should take it seriously, not panic over it but take it seriously and take preventative measures.

Americans should be prepared for the possibility of a COVID-19 outbreak in their community. The community can take measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Currently a vaccine or drug is not available for COVID-19. Community-based interventions such as school dismissals, event cancellations, social distancing, and creating employee plans to work remotely can help slow the spread of COVID-19. Individuals can practice everyday prevention measures like frequent hand washing, staying home when sick, and covering coughs and sneezes.

Person-to-person spread

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

  • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
  • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
  • On clothes and surfaces, it is live 3 days
  • It can take up to 14 days before a person can register as positive for the virus.
These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
What makes COVID-19 so dangerous is how easily and fast it spreads and how long it remains once it has taken hold.  It is the elderly and those with weakened immune systems that are most at risk, so it is vital we all do our part to help prevent as best we can, the spread of the virus.
