Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is planning to endorse an all-female group of progressive candidates to build the far left, with some of the challengers going against members already in the Democratic Party.
Her endorsements of more than one dozen candidates from her new political action committee will include a progressive challenger to potentially unseat a Texas representative from her party.
“I think my ambition right now is to be a little less lonely in Congress,” she told the New York Times.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez endorsed a slate of progressive challengers to Democratic candidates and incumbents, working to create a liberal counterweight to the party’s official campaign arm.
The more than a dozen endorsements include Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez, who is running in the Texas primary against Senate Democrats’ preferred candidate MJ Hegar. Ramirez chief of staff David Sanchez told Mediaite what the Ocasio-Cortez endorsement means for the upstart campaign.
“We’re proud to receive her endorsement, it’s really exciting to have someone who is standing up for progressive values, a Latina running statewide in Texas as a progressive, and being endorsed by AOC means a lot for our campaign,” he said. “It shows what we’re fighting for, what’s at stake, and highlights the big issues out there like climate change and Medicare for All. Texas leads the country in uninsured Americans, at 1-in-5 Texans, for Latinos in the state it’s 1-in-3, so we want to make sure we can get everyone covered.”
Why it matters: The endorsements, first reported by the New York Times, highlight that Ocasio-Cortez plans to use her fundraising ability and public profile to support candidates that back her progressive aims — and, in the case of the Texas Senate race, directly challenge the party establishment’s preferred candidates.
- In two races, the PAC has chosen to back candidates who are primarying a sitting Democratic member of Congress. Both incumbents break with Democrats’ progressive wing on key issues.
- Illinois’ Marie Newman is challenging Rep. Dan Lipinski, an opponent of abortion rights, while Texas’ Jessica Cisneros is taking on Rep. Henry Cuellar, who has an A rating from the National Rifle Association.
What she’s saying: “One of our primary goals is to reward political courage in Congress and also to help elect a progressive majority in the House of Representatives,” Ocasio-Cortez told the Times.
What a joke.
