Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has admitted to and apologized for misleading investigators about his role in a media leak.
It is rather interesting that the disgraced former FBI man was leaking to the media, and covering it up, during the investigation into alleged ties between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia.
Interesting because McCabe now works for one of the biggest media organizations in the world, CNN, as a contributor.
The admission by McCabe was discovered in transcripts of his interviews with investigators that were revealed on Thursday.
The were made public after a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit brought by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.
One FBI investigator expressed his frustration with McCabe as he investigated the leak, ultimately to discover that McCabe was the culprit.
McCabe had initially denied being the source of the leak but then later recanted and apologized for what he had done.
“I remember saying to him, ‘Sir, you understand that we’ve put a lot of work into this based on what you told us,’” the unnamed FBI agent said.
“I mean, and I even said, long nights and weekends working on this trying to find out who amongst your ranks of trusted people would, would do something like that. And [Mr. McCabe] kind of just looked down, kind of nodded and said, ‘Yeah, I’m sorry,’” he said.
McCabe was fired in the Spring of 2018 after Inspector General Michael Horowitz determined that he “lacked candor” with investigators.
Apparently, his ability to lack candor was a big turn on for the brass at CNN who promptly hired him to trash the president.
When FBI investigators confronted Mr. McCabe about the leak, he denied authorizing the disclosure to the Journal. He also presented himself as a “victim,” according to the agent who conducted the interview.
After investigators received “conflicting information” on whether he ordered the leak, Mr. McCabe confessed in a follow-up interview, the transcripts said.
“I need to know from you did you authorize this article? Were you aware of it? Did you authorize it?” the agent said he asked the former deputy director. “And as nice as could be, he said, ‘Yep. Yep, I did.’”
“I told him, I said we sent it to you at least three times or two times,” the agent said, to which McCabe responded, “There was a lot going on.”
Yeah, like working out how to parlay your leaks into a fat contract at CNN.
