AOC’s latest stupidity: ‘My family would have STARVED under new Trump food stamp rules’
OPINION– (TNS) For a member of Congress, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York makes a pretty good bartender.
In case you missed it, the Trump administration is bringing back a Clinton-era work requirement for recipients of food stamps. Back in the day of the stained blue dress, it was called “Workfare” and Bill Clinton said the bill he signed would “end welfare as we know it.”
USA Features News reported:
The Trump administration on Wednesday announced new rules requiring more recipients of food assistance to perform work in exchange for receiving benefits.
The new requirements are expected to cut benefits for hundreds of thousands of people, which has drawn the ire of critics.
The rule will limit states’ ability to exempt adults who are eligible for and capable work to obtain steady employment in order to continue receiving benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. …
The final rule, announced Wednesday, will limit the ability of states to exempt work-eligible adults from having to obtain steady employment in order to receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which helps feed more than 36 million Americans.
Mind you, Clinton’s “Workfare,” which was actually GOP legislation, was credited with moving millions of Americans off welfare an into the workforce.
According to the Congressional Research Service, the number of families receiving cash welfare assistance plunged by more than 60 percent, from more than 5.1 million families in March 1994 to 2.0 million in December 2010.
But, enter President “Fundamental Transformation,” Barack Obama. He loosened the work requirements in 2012, however, by allowing states to apply for waivers. The change led to a steady uptick in welfare rolls.
Trump, then, is simply trying to return us to the status quo objective of requiring people who are receiving taxpayer-funded benefits and who can work to get a job of some sort and help pay for their own upkeep. That’s a policy productive, healthy societies adopt.
Enter the bartender-economist.
Ocasio-Cortez claimed that under the Trump administration’s ‘new’ rules, her family would have starved — starved! — to death.
My family relied on food stamps (EBT) when my dad died at 48.
I was a student. If this happened then, we might’ve just starved.
Now, many people will.
It’s shameful how the GOP works overtime to create freebies for the rich while dissolving lifelines of those who need it most. https://t.co/WOrYvhfPj4

She just loves those freebies!
Not only is the “we would have starved to death!” claim over the top, but the rule changes would not have applied to her family.
The work requirement would only impact able-bodied, childless adults between the ages of 18-49 which means her family would not have been impacted by this requirement at all.
1) They would not have starved.
2) The law wouldn’t have applied to them.
3) If you can’t agree that single, able-bodied people should be working if collecting money from their fellow citizens, you’re part of the problem. https://t.co/XNw1ynXOs6

No wonder Americans can’t get cheaper prescription drugs, lower healthcare costs, better infrastructure, and trade deals that help our country.
We have too many posturing lunatics like this one in office.
