Enjoy Some OPINION, Speculation and Analysis by Baish| It has been reported that Republican Senators Mike Lee and Mitt Romney have gone behind President Donald Trump’s back in order to block additional funding for the President’s proposed border wall between the southern border of the United States and Mexico.
Lee and Romney are hoping to pass a bill which would stop the President from using emergency declarations to increase the length of the border wall. Unless Mitch McConnell gives it his all to stop the bill from moving to be voted on in the Senate, the bill may come to fruition.
Laws currently exist that allow the current President of the United States to funnel existing appropriations to places they are needed.
The President recently declared a national emergency in which he cited extreme cartel violence, human trafficking and drug trafficking in order to tap into access funds to get the border wall built.
Why didn’t anyone go after Barack Obama when he declared 13 national emergencies relating to the Swine flu, Iran, and the Flint Water Crisis?
Utah GOP Sens. Mike Lee and Mitt Romney said the Air Force told them Wednesday that money appropriated by Congress for the Hill projects would instead be spent on the wall as a result of President Donald Trump’s emergency declaration in February. Both senators had urged the Defense Department to protect funding for the Utah projects.
“Congress has been ceding far too much power to the executive branch for decades and it is far past time for Congress to restore the proper balance of power between the three branches,” Senator Lee said in a statement.
On Tuesday, Pentagon officials stated that the Defense Department would be moving $3.6 billion from 127 existing military construction projects in order to construct roughly 175 miles of the southern border wall.
According to Senator Lee, the proposed Article One Act would fix imbalances stemming from the National Emergencies Act.
The bill presented by the two Republican senators aims to prevent all “future emergency declarations made under the National Emergencies Act after 30 days unless Congress votes to extend them. Congress now can cancel an emergency declaration only by passing a resolution that withstands a presidential veto,” according to KSL.
Romney stated that he is “disappointed” that the project will be “delayed” even though Lee raised many good points.
I wonder what good any project will be if we lose our sovereignty due to an unsecure border?
