Giuliani: ‘It’s clear Comey tried to entrap’ President Trump: ‘He should have been prosecuted’
By Jon Dougherty
(NationalSentinel) Following the release on Thursday of Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s report on the conduct of James Comey as it related to his involvement in “Spygate,” presidential lawyer Rudy Giuliani said it is “obvious” that the former FBI director was attempting to entrap President Donald Trump so he could be removed from office.
In addition, Giuliani, the mayor of New York City during the 9/11 attacks who hired Comey as an assistant federal prosector in the 1980s, said he thinks the disgraced FBI chief should have been prosecuted.
During a Friday night interview with Fox News‘ Laura Ingraham, Giuliani said that Horowitz’s final report made clear that virtually everything Comey had asserted in the past — that he never leaked sensitive information and that he honestly portrayed his actions to lawmakers and congressional investigators — was untrue.
What’s more, he said, Comey’s claim to President Trump that he was never the subject of an investigation was completely false.
The meeting that Comey had with Trump in January 2017, in which he presented the “Russia dossier” as valid but said the president wasn’t being looked at by federal investigators, “was complete entrapment,” Giuliani said. “One hundred percent.”
“Comey, despite his moral problems, is a very smart guy,” the former NYC mayor continued, “unlike [former special counsel Robert] Mueller, who’s lacking in intellect, this guy’s very smart. He was trying to trap [Trump] like he trapped [former Trump national security advisor Michael] Flynn.
“‘You’re not a target, it’s okay,’” Giuliani said, mimicking Comey. “But I have this thing in my back and I’ll indict you. Horrible thing to do. Any reputable prosecutor would be disgraced by that.
“So he was trying to entrap the president. It was completely disingenuous for him to make these statements now” denying that, the presidential counselor said.
Giuliani said that FBI agents have lost respect for Comey and that in sum, his actions were “worse” than “anything J. Edgar Hoover ever did.”
As for whether the Justice Department should have passed up charging him, Giuliani said no.
The IG report “sort of details the worst director in the history of the FBI,” he said. “He broke every rule of the FBI. I think he should be prosecuted.”
