State Of Emergency Just Declared

The fourth named storm of the hurricane season, Dorian, strengthened Wednesday into a hurricane near the U.S. Virgin IslandsPuerto Rico and the Bahamas — and by the weekend it may threaten off Florida’s coast as a Category 3 storm, Fox News reports.

The National Hurricane Center said Wednesday in its 2 p.m. EST update that Dorian was located right above St. Thomas with maximum winds of 75 mph – a 25 mph increase from Tuesday – as it moved northwest at 13 mph.

A hurricane warning has been issued for U.S. Virgin Islands, in addition to the British Virgin Islands, Vieques and Culebra, which means that hurricane conditions are expected within the next 12 hours. A hurricane watch is in effect for Puerto Rico, where a tropical storm warning is also in effect for the same areas.

The White House said in a statement that President Donald Trump had approved an emergency declaration for Puerto Rico late on Tuesday, allowing for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide assistance in coordination with ongoing disaster preparedness efforts.

“We are better prepared than when Hurricane Maria attacked our island,” Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vazquez said during a televised news conference.

Vazquez, who took office this month after political turmoil led to the resignation of his predecessor, said preparations for the storm were more than 90% complete, culminating with the opening of emergency shelters, Reuters Wire/ Federalist Papers reports.

“This is trending in the wrong direction,” Fox News Meteorologist Adam Klotz said Wednesday on “Fox & Friends.” “It’s strengthening, maybe spending more time over warm water, which will allow it to continue to pick up those wind speeds, pick up all that extra moisture. It’s looking like a tough system.”

After Saturday, the NHC said that all the intensity models show Dorian then getting stronger while threatening the Bahamas and the southeastern United States.

“This could go anywhere from Miami as far north as Savannah,” Klotz said Wednesday.

“The risk of dangerous storm surge and hurricane-force winds is increasing in the central and northwestern Bahamas and along the Florida east coast, although it is too soon to determine where these hazards will occur,” the NHC said. “Residents in these areas should ensure that they have their hurricane plan in place and not focus on the exact forecast track of Dorian’s center.”

In Puerto Rico, the storm is expected to bring the threat of landslides, widespread flooding and power outages. President Trump declared an emergency Tuesday night and ordered federal assistance for local authorities.

Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone involved.
