Bernie Sanders Picks Up His First Big Endorsement

As Joe Bidens numbers are plummeting, Warren and Sanders are picking up steam.

Bernie just picked up his first endorsement from a national union- The United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America.

What in the hell are they thinking?

The union which has 35,000 members, announced their endorsement of the Vermont senator Monday at a Pittsburgh convention, Politico reports. The move makes Sanders the second presidential candidate to be endorsed by a national union.

The labor organization is a longtime ally of Sanders. It backed him in his first bid for the White House in 2016, and Sanders invited the president of a Pennsylvania-based UE local to speak at his campaign kickoff rally this year. Sanders’ campaign also used its massive email list to push supporters to a UE strike in 2019.

Sanders delivered a speech to the union’s members on Monday before they voted to endorse him, saying corporate greed “is an illness, it is an addiction — and if the corporate CEOs don’t get the treatment that they need, we will provide the treatment for them.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden is the only other presidential candidate endorsed by a union: the 300,000 member International Association of Fire Fighters, The Daily Caller News Foundation reports.

“If there is going to be class struggle in the United States,” Sanders told union members Monday before they endorsed him, “it’s time that the working class got on the offensive and won that struggle,” Politico reported.

The union’s endorsement follows Sander’s release of a plan aiming to double union memberships, dubbed the Workplace Democracy Plan.

Sanders hopes to increase union membership by January 2025. It also promises to make joining unions easier.

The plan promises to give unions the ability to organize through “a majority sign up process,” end right to work laws recently enacted by Republicans, enact provisions that ensure companies can’t prevent unions from forming, repeal Section 14(b) of the Taft Hartley Act, provide federal workers the right to strike and more.

“Making it easier for workers to form unions is not a radical idea,” the campaign website adds. “62 percent of the American people support labor unions, but according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, union membership is barely half of what it was 35 years ago.”
