Rep. Dan Crenshaw Explains His Support for ‘Red Flag Laws’

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) says the words “Red Flag Law” emotionally trigger a lot of people, Breitbart reports.

On August 4, Breitbart News reported that Crenshaw emerged from the El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, attacks pushing for Red Flag Laws.

“Clearly, when we said ‘Red Flag Laws’ you guys stop listening, you can’t hear what we are suggesting, because understandably you automatically assume that we are just agreeing with the left’s version of that law. And we all know the left’s version would not be good, it would not protect due process.

At its heart what we are talking about is the ability to confiscate weapons where there is evidence that violence is about to be committed. It’s that simple, and this isn’t that controversial.”

Several states already have Red Flag Laws, but they want to add to it and make it nationwide, then truly punish law abiding citizens. Oh, then the new EXTENSIVE background check included! Bye, Bye Second Amendment.

Our Second Amendment is the GLUE that holds our entire constitution together. It was put in place by our WISE Founders to protect us from the very ones that are trying to strip it away! 

The TAPS Act that Crenshaw refers to is H.R. 838, the Threat Assessment, Prevention, and Safety Act:

The legislation is designed to identify threats to the community.

• Will standardize and provide a behavioral threat assessment and management process across the Federal government

• Will provide States the training, resources, and support needed to stand up community-based, multidisciplinary behavioral threat assessment and management units

• Recognizes that behavioral threat assessment and management processes must become part of the culture and fabric of contemporary law enforcement

• Urges that this is a matter of national security – if we act now and work together, we can save lives

Red flag laws — also known as Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) or Gun Violence Restraining Orders (GVROs) — enable law enforcement, and sometimes family members and other concerned parties, to petition a judge to remove guns from individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others.

A bipartisan proposal by Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., is gaining momentum.  The emerging plan would create a federal grant program to encourage states to adopt “red flag” laws to take guns away from people believed to be dangers to themselves or others.

In an interview, Blumenthal said there’s “a growing wave of support on both sides of the aisle” for the red-flag plan — more momentum in fact “than any other gun violence plan” being debated in Congress, including a proposal Blumenthal supports to require universal background checks for gun purchases.
