Mexico says it has reduced illegal alien traffic to the U.S. by nearly 40 percent
The Mexican government says that it has managed to cut illegal alien traffic to the United States by nearly 40 percent in an ongoing effort by the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to reduce migrant flows and stave off the imposition of tariffs by the Trump administration.
According to Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s foreign relations secretary, flow from mostly Central American migrants has been reduced by 39 percent since late spring, dropping from 144,278 in May to 87,648 in June.

The Daily Signal noted:
Faced with the threat of a 5% tax on all of its exports to the U.S., Mexico City agreed to send thousands more of its newly formed National Guard troops to its own southern border with Guatemala, a hotbed for illegal migrant crossings. It also agreed to more adamantly fight human smuggling and human trafficking operations.
“This is the first time we’ve heard anything like this kind of number of law enforcement being deployed in Mexico to address migration—not just at their southern border, but also on the transportation routes to the northern border and in coordinated patrols in key areas along our southwest border,” acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan said in June about the bilateral agreement.
As we reported in June:
Thwarted by inaction from congressional Democrats to help him solve the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border and blocked successively by Left-wing judges Barack Obama put on the federal bench, POTUS Donald Trump bypassed all of them and went directly to one of the biggest sources of the problem: Mexico.
Under threat of tariffs, POTUS and U.S. diplomats appealed to Mexico City to begin enforcing its own immigration laws and to do more to interdict rather than enable endless streams of humanity from Central American heading for the American state.
It’s early — the agreement only went into effect this month — but by many indications, the president’s plan is working.
Come to find out, we also noted, stopping illegals from passing through Mexico just happens to be popular with the country’s own citizens:
A new survey published by a major Mexican newspaper shows significant public opposition to the migrants passing through Mexico in an effort to enter the United States.
a plurality 44.4 % of Mexicans say government's response to undocumented migrants should be "expel them immediately." Only 9% say grant unconditional passage to the US

61.5% of Mexicans oppose the entry of undocumented migrants generally and 53+ % oppose President Lopez Obrador's plan to grant them work visas

Lane notes further: “It would appear that anti-migrant sentiment in Mexico is, if anything, stronger than it is in the U.S.”
The Financial Times broke down the Mexican newspaper report and survey:
Some analysts blame Mexico’s own policies for the rise in migration. After taking office in December, Mr. López Obrador offered migrants humanitarian visas. Many used them to travel unimpeded towards the US border.
“They generated this problem with humanitarian visas — the figures tell you that this is a problem created by this administration,” said Jorge Buendía of polling group Laredo & Buendía. Even amid criticism that Mexico has conceded too much to the US, public opinion in Mexico is hardening against the migrants.
The U.S. Border Patrol also reports that encounters with illegal aliens has fallen off substantially in recent weeks since the agreement was signed.
USBP either apprehended or turned away a total of 104,344 illegal aliens in June, a 28 percent drop from the 144,278 encounters that took place in May—marking the first decrease in monthly apprehensions since January.
In addition, Mexico agreed to hold more U.S. asylum-seekers as they wait for their claims to be processed in an immigration court, a policy known as “Remain in Mexico.”
