The Opinion of K. T. Baish| Some top Democrats have shot down a controversial resolution proposed by Democratic Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar in which she supported and encouraged the movement to boycott Israel as a whole.

This move comes as more Democrats continue to rally behind Omar and her “squad” of progressive congresswomen of color who were recently bashed by President Trump on Twitter and told to return to their homelands.

Fox News reports:

Omar, D-Minn., proposed the resolution earlier this week in a bid to push back against U.S. laws banning the Israel boycotts. The text of the measure affirms the right of Americans to organize boycotts of foreign countries.

While the resolution doesn’t explicitly name Israel or the pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, she told media outlets that the resolution concerns the Jewish state.

“We are introducing a resolution … to really speak about the American values that support and believe in our ability to exercise our First Amendment rights in regard to boycotting,” Omar said to Al-Monitor.

Interestingly, the same Democrats who defended Omar and her friends this week after the President’s Twitter remarks weren’t thrilled with her proposal and recent criticism of Israel.

According to Fox, “Earlier this year, many Democrats condemned comments from Omar deemed anti-Semitic. Now, several members are making clear they’re not on board with her BDS resolution. California Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman, one of the more senior Jewish lawmakers in the House, told The Jerusalem Post that the resolution proposed by the fellow Democrat is not serious.”

I can’t imagine that any committee is going to mark up or take seriously any pro-BDS resolution,” Sherman stated. “Am I worried about the overall BDS movement worldwide as an economic matter? No. As an effort to delegitimize Israel, of course. The comments here today are a tiny part of that delegitimizing effort.”

Democratic New York Representative Eliot L. Engel criticized the BDS movement calling it a “cancer,” without personally attacking Omar.

“I think the BDS movement is harmful, and anyone that promotes it is making a big mistake,” he explained to The Washington Times.

Sherman also said that the measure was “dead on arrival.”

Fox reports, “Pro-Israel Democrats, meanwhile, proposed an anti-BDS resolution that passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, accusing the boycott movement against the Jewish state of promoting ‘principles of collective guilt, mass punishment and group isolation.’ Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., said during the committee hearing that the BDS movement ‘envisions a world without Israel,’ before adding, ‘I reject it!’”

The resolution, which was supported by Democrat Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and John Lewis of Georgia, reaffirms “the right to boycott as an expression of free speech — and even cites examples of boycott movements against Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and apartheid South Africa,” according to Fox.

“Americans of conscience have a proud history of participating in boycotts to advocate for human rights abroad including … boycotting Nazi Germany from March 1933 to October 1941 in response to the dehumanization of the Jewish people in the lead-up to the Holocaust,” Omar stated in the resolution that was introduced on Tuesday.

As usual, the talking points coming from the left equate modern day Israel (and usually anyone in American politics who is to the right of Mao as a literal “nazi.”)  In my view, this is all part of an attempt by those on the left to dehumanize their political opposition, and in doing aso also create and foster the conception by their followers that using violence against us is justified because we are literal “Nazis” to them, and hurting a Nazi is a virtuous thing to do in their minds.

As a Jew I hate Nazis, I also know that the Republican party is not filled with Nazi’s. All that being said, Nazi’s have every right to speak their minds as long as their speech does not directly incite violence or violate the 1st Amendment.  The solution to bad speech is not less bad speech, it’s more good speech!
