GOP’s Meadows says declassification of key Spygate docs ‘right around the corner’ as Barr probe deepens
House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) said Monday that he believes presidential declassification of key documents in the ‘Spygate’ scandal and ‘Russian collusion’ hoax are “right around the corner” as Attorney General William Barr’s efforts to get to the origins of the operation against the 2016 Trump campaign deepen.
Meadows, during an appearance on Fox News, was responding to former GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy’s comments last week about how Comey’s FBI may very well have misrepresented the infamous “Steele Dossier” before the FISA court, while also withholding other key information, so the bureau could get surveillance warrants to spy on Team Trump.
“[Gowdy] has seen documents that actually I have not seen,” Meadows stated. “But we have come to the same conclusion and that is, indeed, [one-time Trump adviser] George Papadopoulos was actually taped and recorded.”
Meadows also said that if documents are released, they will expose exculpatory information on whether or not the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government.
“I think the delay is over,” Meadows continued. “I think the president is serious. I’ve spoken to him recently and I think declassification is right around the corner and hopefully the American people will be able to judge for themselves.”
Meadows also said he spoke with Papadopoulos regarding how POTUS may declassifiy the records.
“The American people will be astonished to see not only was it going on and the president was right, he was actually taped and recorded but other than that, he was not colluding with the Russians and they knew this very early on. So that could be the game changer that [Gowdy] was referring to,” the Freedom Caucus chair said.
Last week, Gowdy gave some ‘advice‘ to the investigators working for Barr and looking into the origins of the Trump team investigation.
“So whoever’s investigating this, tell them to look for emails between Brennan and Comey in December 2016,” Gowdy said to Sean Hannity of Fox News, referring to former CIA Director John Brennan and fired FBI Director James Comey.
The South Carolina Republican’s comments come after news broke that Attorney General William Barr appointed long-time corruption expert and U.S. Attorney from Connecticut John Durham to look into such matters.
“What I’m telling Mr. Durham or whoever is going to look into this is, I think you’ll see late in (December) 2016, well after it had been used, it was still unverified and the people responsible for it were referring to it as unverified and one or the other demanded that it be included in the intelligence assessment which then prompted the discussion you and I are having now,” Gowdy said.
