At least five people were killed and 24 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago as weekend temperatures heated up over the weekend.
An 8-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl were shot at a baby shower along with 4 adults.
The 8-year-old boy was shot in the chest and is in critical condition. The 6-year-old girl was shot in the shin and is also in critical condition.
Four adults were also hit in the shooting and were taken to various hospital across the city, police said. All of their conditions were stabilized except for a 29-year-old woman who suffered wounds to her shoulder and chest, The Chicago Sun-Times reported.
She was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, police said.
The shooters fled on foot, according to the police, and the matter is under investigation, Daily Caller reported.
“Cooperation has been very limited with detectives, and based on victim profiles we suspect this could have been a possible retaliatory shooting from an earlier incident that stemmed from an ongoing gang conflict in that neighborhood,” said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot is “heartbroken” about the incident, according to a tweet she posted. Lightfoot had predicted the warmer weather would lead to a rise in violent crime, saying she would wait to evaluate police Superintendent Eddie Johnson until the summer season is over.
Last weekend saw 22 people shot, three of them fatally, across the city.
Rest in peace.
