The Congressional attempt to stop him as a “dangerous” and “reckless” resolution that was “a vote against reality.”
President Trump on Friday used the first veto of his administration to reject a bipartisan resolution that sought to block his declaration of a national emergency at the border, a move almost certain to kill the measure.
“Today I am vetoing this resolution,” Trump, surrounded by law enforcement officials and families of those killed by illegal immigrants, said in the Oval Office. “Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it.”
Trump’s veto came a day after 12 Senate Republicans joined Democrats in voting for the resolution, despite last-minute efforts between the White House and GOP lawmakers to keep the Republican Party united. The measure ultimately passed 59-41, and Trump immediately vowed to veto, Fox News reports.
“The vast majority are rejected, but smuggling operations making a tremendous amount of money, like they’ve never made before, are using these people to crash the system. Our immigration system is stretched beyond the breaking point.
Despite record numbers of apprehensions at the border, there was not enough space to detain them all. There’s absolutely nothing we can do. We’re bursting at the seams, you can only hold so much, The only option then is to release them, and you can’t do that either because when you release them they come into our society and in many cases, they are stone cold criminals.
That’s why I say, America First, if that’s ok, America First, The only emergency Congress voted to revoke was the one to protect our own country so think of that. … This is the one that they don’t want to do and this is the one perhaps they should most do.”
While the attempt to block the National Security Border Wall by Democrats along with stinging rebuke from members of Trump’s own party, his veto is likely the last word as lawmakers are unlikely to muster the two-thirds majority required to override.
