Border Patrol Agents arrest Tucson Man Smuggling 11 Illegal Aliens
TUCSON, Ariz. – Tucson Station Border Patrol agents arrested a 25-year-old Tucson man found smuggling 11 illegal aliens inside the locked bed of his truck Thursday.
That afternoon, an agent initiated a vehicle stop on an F-250 pickup truck driving on State Route 86. The agent questioned the driver and received consent to deploy his K-9 partner, which resulted in a positive alert to an odor the K-9 is trained to detect.
Agents pried open a locked steel hinged door to the utility bed after the driver stated he was unable to open it, revealing 11 individuals.
The individuals inside were laying on top of each other with no water, air conditioning, or means of escape. All were showing signs of heat illness, prompting agents to request emergency medical services.
The individuals were administered first aid and provided fluids, but no advanced medical care was necessary.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested and will face charges for alien smuggling. The 11 persons trapped inside the truck were illegally present in the U.S. and were processed for immigration violations.
Also, Nogales Station Border Patrol agents arrested three U.S. citizens attempting to smuggle 21 bundles of methamphetamine through the Interstate 19 Immigration Checkpoint Thursday night.
Agents referred a Chevrolet Malibu containing two males, and one female for further inspection after a canine alerted to an odor it was trained to detect emitting from the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 21 bundles of methamphetamine hidden throughout the dashboard of the vehicle. The bundles had a combined weight of more than 22 pounds with an estimated street value of $538,800.
Agents arrested all three individuals for narcotics smuggling after seizing the vehicle and drugs.
Federal law allows agents to charge individuals by complaint, a method that allows the filing of charges for criminal activity without inferring guilt. An individual is presumed innocent unless and until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials welcome assistance from the community. Citizens can report suspicious activity to the Border Patrol and remain anonymous by calling 1-877-872-7435 toll free. Reporting illicit activity could result in saving someone’s life.
