CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A Charlotte soldier returned home from the Carolina coast Friday morning to find his Grimes St. home ransacked.

National Guardsman Luis Ocampo was working in New Bern for 10 days, assisting with Hurricane Florence relief, where he only got a few hours of sleep per night.

Ocampo tells WBTV his girlfriend and son were staying with family, but had checked in on the house Thursday night.

When he returned Friday morning, he found everything of value stolen from his home, including a laptop with his schoolwork and assignments on it, and food from the family’s refrigerator.

Luis Ocampo is a NC army medic with 6 years of honorable service. Recently he was on State active duty helping with hurricane Florence relief efforts…he returned home to an empty ransacked house. He did all he could to help those in a time of need and now he is the one in a time of need. Every penny could help himself, his girlfriend and their baby. I have worked closely with Ocampo, in the national guard and he is an amazing soldier and person. I am honored to know him and cannot believe something so terrible could happen to someone so dedicated to the service, his family and school.

Ocampo said that his girlfriend and son checked on the house Thursday night, but by the morning everything of value had been taken. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have confirmed they are investigating.

GoFundMe page was set up for Ocampo and had raised close to $15,000 as of Saturday evening.

The scumbags that use horrific events to loot and steal need to have new laws put into place so they can be dealt with appropriately.  It is a low that brings out the warfighter in me when I hear about our brothers and sisters in uniform out doing what we do for the civilians, just to be treated like this.

Then you see other Americans rise up and help the soldier, it brings joy to the heart and hope to our future, that not all Americans have lost their way.

Chris “Badger” Thomas is a Veteran who served our country as an Army Combat Medic.

GOD BLESS.
