The Trump administration’s stern warnings against plans by Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and his allies – namely Iran and Russia to wipe out the opposition-held stronghold of Idlib have at least temporarily kept the expected attack from moving forward, Syrian opposition activists tell Fox News.
“The offensive is certainly on hold, and that is in large part a result of the renewed commitment from the United States to establish consequences should Russia and the regime continue with reckless bombing of Idlib,” said Kenan Rahmani, Advocacy Manager at The Syria Campaign.
“Russia and the regime have a long history of testing red lines and seeing what they can get away with, but there is a sense this time that this isn’t just rhetoric from the U.S, this is an actual policy. And the policy is that the U.S will absolutely not allow mass killings and mass atrocities.” ~ Rahmani
U.S defense statements have said “massive bombing packages” have been drawn up by the Pentagon, should Assad and Russia ignore warnings and go ahead with a chemical attack in Idlib.
“The U.S. just isn’t going to tolerate it,” U.S. Defense
Turkey has deployed soldiers and military equipment along the Trukey/Idlib borders stating that they do not want Assad and Russia to fore mass evacuations because Turkey cannot and will not allow the civilians to flood over their borders.
Turkey has secured borders; it is very scary. There are more than three million people here with nowhere to go, Trump is time trading with the harsh statements about chemicals, but Assad kills us every day with explosives and barrel bombs and missiles and no one cares for that.” ~ Walid Ased
Hulusi Akar, the Turkish defense minister, said a military operation in the densely populated rebel enclave would drag the already problematic region toward disaster. He spoke during a meeting with foreign ambassadors late Wednesday, according to the state-run Turkish Anadolu Agency.
The Turkish military is attempting to prevent a mass causality scenario and broker a cease fire in the region. Russia, Iran and Syria to this point, do not seem open to a cease fire as they continue their bombings as well as massing troops and equipment on the borders of Idlib.
While the battle continues it is not being reported much by mainstream news due to a lack of interest. People need to know what is going on and that men. women and children are being killed by Assad and Russia as they attack Idlib.
“There will be another chemical attack, it is clear from Russian speeches they are claiming in advance that the rebels have chemical weapons, which means that Russia and the regime will use chemicals and then blame it on others. Even if a group like al-Qaeda had chemical weapons, they don’t have the equipment to use it.” ~ Former Syrian Brig. Gen. Zaher al-Sakat
The speculation on why would Assad approve chemical attacks which he knows would bring down the rain from the U.S., doesn’t make full sense at this point. For some, it seems Assad has already won and that Idlibis almost completed, while others say that Assad cannot break through Idlib without genocide on the Idlib civilians which again, would bring the U.S. military smack down.
President Bashar al-Assad of Syria has approved the use of chlorine gas in an offensive against the country’s last major rebel stronghold, U.S. officials said, raising the prospects for another retaliatory U.S. military strike as thousands of people flee.
