As Bashar al-Assad and Russia are prepared to attack Idlib even though there are up to 3 million civilians with nowhere to go.
“This is going to be far more catastrophic than anything we witnessed so far” in the Syrian conflict, Mona Yaoubian, an expert on Syria at the U.S. Institute of Peace, told me. She said the large numbers of civilians and the fact that there’s nowhere for them to go makes the impending fighting a particular risk for civilians. “I think by all accounts, the regime is going to stop at nothing to take this territory back,” she said. “And so we expect a particularly brutal onslaught on the part of the Syrian regime backed by the Russians” Defense One reports.
Russia says it has launched airstrikes targeting militant infrastructure in Syria’s northern Idlib province, where the government is expected to launch a major offensive against the rebels’ last major stronghold. The Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday that four jets struck targets linked to an al-Qaida-linked group, including a weapons depot and a launch pad for drones that Russia says have targeted its military bases in Syria. The Russian military says it has shot down dozens of hostile drones.
On Wednesday, several airstrikes were also carried out on positions of the Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (previously known as the al-Nusra Front) terrorist group in al-Lataminah, Sakik, Taybat al-Imam, al-Sayyad, Jeni al-Albawi, northern al-Ma’an, and north of Kafar Zita, located in the northern parts of Hama. As a result, bases and military hardware of terrorists were destroyed, while tens of militants, including their commanders, were killed.
Strongholds of the Jaish al-Izzah and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham terrorist groups, stationed in northern Halfaya, al-Zalaqiyat, Ma’arkaba, and Zor Abuzaid in northern Hama were also pounded by Syrian warplanes. Dozens of militants were killed and their military vehicles were destroyed during the airstrikes. RWT Intel report on Current Syrian Conflict in Idlib.
The United States and President Trump administration is closely monitoring the assault on Idlib, if any chemical or biological weapons are used the U.S has warned that we will immediately retaliate with the likes they have never seen before.
