DAMASCUS, Syria – A string of powerful blasts from the direction of a military airport in Damascus lit up the skies and shook the capital city in the early morning hours on Sunday, residents and state TV reported, Fox News reports.
The explosions were seen and heard coming from the direction of the Mezzeh airport, southwest of the capital. The airport has been targeted in a number of airstrikes in recent years that the government has blamed on Israel.
The conflicting reports are from the head of UK-based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, told AFP news agency the Mezzeh military airport was struck by a “possible Israeli missile” fired across the occupied Golan Heights.
The other report according to state-run Sana TV station that is saying a “unnamed military source” states that it was not an Israeli missile strike, that it was an explosion at a near by munitions depot and that an electrical short is the cause.
The situation in Syria is extremely tense as Assad forces are ready to carry out an assault on Idlib, which has Russia and the U.S. warning one another on involvement on the assault.
U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton warned Russian officials in Geneva Thursday that the U.S. had intelligence on a potential upcoming Syrian chemical attack and warned that the U.S. response would be stronger than ever, Bloomberg reported Friday citing people familiar with the talks. Following Tuesday’s joint U.S. Mission to the United Nations statement threatening further attacks on Syria in response to chemical warfare, Bolton also spoke of a potential Syrian chemical attack Wednesday, something he said he was “obviously concerned about” ahead of “plans for the Syrian regime to resume offensive military activities in Idlib province.”
“Just so there’s no confusion here, if the Syrian regime uses chemical weapons we will respond very strongly. They really ought to think about this a long time before they come to any decision because there is no ambiguity in the U.S. position on this point.”
