ABC 6 News reports that the incident initially erupted as a disagreement at the register. The male then grabbed a firearm that was in his female companions waistband and opened fire.
Dozens of people were inside the store at the Cedarbrook Plaza shopping center as the gunman opened fire the around 6 p.m.
Twelve-year-old Nicholas Hatcher was recording video on his cell phone when suddenly the first shot rang out. His mom, Rachel Suarez, said they made a dash for the door.
“Everybody ran, and then the alarm came on,” said Suarez. “I started to run. I was scared for my life.”
Jaynee Davis, a nurse, said she tended to one of the shooting victims.
“We didn’t know if the shooter was in the store,” Davis said. “We were petrified.”
One Walmart employee told Action News her colleague was shot in the leg and was screaming: “I’m shot, I’m shot.” ABC Local 6 News
After the shooting, the male suspect then proceeded to the parking lot with his female companion, they then fled in a 2001 gold-colored Pontiac Grand Prix.
Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said that the suspected shooter — whom police did not identify — had been seen tossing a gun out of his car window in the area of Stenton and Mt. Pleasant avenues before the collision, which occurred shortly after the shooting around 6:07 p.m.
They then crashed into a police cruiser just blocks from the Walmart at East Sedgewick and Forrest.The officers took the man into custody after a “violent struggle,” Small said, and police needed to use a Taser to subdue him later, when witnesses from the Walmart had been taken to the police van to identify him.
The officer’s were on a unrelated call when the fleeing suspects rammed into the their police cruiser.
The 25-year-old female was arrested for her involvement in the shooting. Police say she was holding the gun when the shooter grabbed it from her.
“I can tell you that the 30-year-old male appeared to be very high on either narcotics, alcohol or a combination of both,”Inspector Small said.
