US President Donald Trump last month offered to negotiate a “more comprehensive” deal but Iran said it would not negotiate under the pressure of sanctions.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s remarks were carried by Iran’s state television Monday. He says “along with sanctions, Americans have recently raised two more options, war and talks. … War will not happen and we will not enter talks.”
“Recently, U.S. officials have been talking blatantly about us. Beside sanctions, they are talking about war and negotiations, in this regard, let me say a few words to the people: THERE WILL BE NO WAR, NOR WILL WE NEGOTIATE WITH THE U.S. I ban holding any talks with America … America never remains loyal to its promises in talks … just gives empty words. negotiations with the U.S. would definitely harm us and they are forbidden.” ~ Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s
Khamenei’s declaration came as Iran unveiled a new short-range ballistic missile developed under a weapons program that has alarmed US allies in the region and was a factor in Mr Trump’s decision to pull out of the nuclear pact. The defense minister, Brig Gen Amir Hatami, said the Fateh Mobin missile was an “agile, radar-evading and tactical missile with pinpoint accuracy” that had been completely locally developed and successfully test-fired.
“We will not spare any effort to increase the missile capabilities of the country and we will certainly increase our missile power every day,” Iran’s Tasnim news agency quoted him as saying.
“Be sure that the greater the pressures and psychological warfare against the great nation of Iran, our will to enhance our defense power in all fields will increase,” he said.
“In November they ratchet up to yet another level. Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States. I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less!” ~ President Trump
Rouhani told state television on Monday night that Iran had no intention of negotiating a new deal with the United States.
“If you’re an enemy and you stab the other person with a knife, and then you say you want negotiations, then the first thing you have to do is remove the knife. They want to launch psychological warfare against the Iranian nation. Negotiations with sanctions doesn’t make sense.”
The impact of the return of sanctions has ramped up tensions inside Iran, which has seen days of protests and strikes in multiple towns and cities over water shortages, high prices, and increasing anger at the political system.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed it had held war games in the Gulf over the past several days, saying they were aimed at “confronting possible threats” by enemies, the state news state news agency IRNA reported.
