IRAQ – A top Islamic State member, in charge of the 2014 massacre in east of Tikrit, has been arrested in Salahuddin province, the Security Media Center announced.

The spokesperson for the center, Brig, Gen. Yahia Rasool, said in a statement that troops, backed by forces from Samarra Operations Command “managed to arrest a dangerous militant, who was in charge of a massacre, when number of security personnel from al-Alam town were killed in 2014,” Iraqi News reported.

The militant, according to Rasool, “was arrested in an operation in al-Muthanna district in Samarra city.”

In 2014, the militant group, which was in control al al-Alam by then, reportedly killed 17 security personnel and civilians.

On Monday, three people were killed, while the fourth was abducted in an armed attack in Zor Hawi al-Busat region, north of Samarra.

Yesterday we reported that two people were killed and 10 others injured in two bomb blasts in eastern Mosul.

Speaking to The Baghdad Post website, Colonel Ahmed al-Jabouri said that two blasts exploded in the ancient city of Nimrud in southeastern Mosul, leaving two people dead and 10 others wounded.

According to Jabouri, there were members of Al-Hashd Al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) among the casualties.

The first explosion targeted two people riding a motorbike, leaving one person dead and another wounded, Iraqi News reported.

The second blast happened at the scene of the first explosion, leaving one person dead and nine others wounded, including four members of Al-Hashd Al-Shaabi.

Officials have not provided further details.

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country. The group still has dormant cells, through which it carries out attacks, across Iraq like it used to do before 2014.

A total of 79 Iraqi civilians were killed and another 99 injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq in July 2018, according to casualty figures recorded by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Baghdad was the worst affected Governorate, with 63 civilian casualties (30 killed, 33 injured), followed by Kirkuk (8 killed, 34 injured) and Nineveh (13 killed and 05 injured).
