U.S. Border Patrol Arrest Wanted Sex Offender in Detroit
Subject is an Eritrean Citizen illegally present in the United States
DETROIT— U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Detroit Station along with Detroit Police Department arrest Eritrean citizen who is a wanted sex offender.
On Tuesday, U.S. Border Patrol agents responded to a call from the Detroit Police Department to assist in identifying a man from Eritrea who was attempting to gain entry to a local church in Detroit. The church which has an active child care facility, denied entry to the subject due to his criminal sexual background and contacted authorities.
Upon questioning by U.S. Border Patrol agents the subject was identified as Eritrean Citizen Yemaneh Gebremedhin, who is a 53 year old male and convicted sex offender. The subject was transported back to the Detroit Border Patrol Station for further processing.
During processing it was determined that Gebremedhin was convicted in 2015 of Gross Sexual Imposition and has an active warrant for his arrest out of Cuyahoga County, Ohio for failure to register as a sex offender. Further investigation revealed that Gebremedhin is also illegally present in the United States and was ordered removed from the country in June of 2016, which he failed to comply with.
“This is another great example of how the U.S. Border Patrol and the Detroit Police Department collaborated to remove a predator like this from the streets of Detroit,” said Chief Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison. “These Agents and Officers should be commended for their due diligence to remove this threat from the community.”
Gebremedhin was processed and extradited to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department in Ohio. ICE ERO has placed a detainer on Gebremedhim and will take custody of him once criminal proceedings are complete in Cuyahoga County.
