A 32-year-old man was sentenced today to 40 years to life in state prison for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend during a domestic violence incident in 2015, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.
On May 3, Eric Jerome Williams Jr. of Long Beach, pleaded no contest to one count of second-degree murder in case NA103253. The defendant also admitted a special allegation that he personally and intentionally discharged a firearm, which caused great bodily injury and death.
Deputy District Attorney Troy Davis of the Victim Impact Program, who prosecuted the case, said Williams and victim Jerica Owens were in a relationship for several years and lived together before they broke up. The two also shared a son, the prosecutor added.
On Dec. 22, 2015, Williams met with Owens and their 20-month-old son in the 1900 block of Chestnut Avenue in Long Beach when the two got into an argument, the prosecutor said.
During the argument, Williams pulled out a gun and shot the victim several times in the head in front of their son, the prosecutor said. The defendant then fled the area with their child, the prosecutor added.
Following the shooting, law enforcement located Williams at a friend’s home. The defendant was subsequently arrested and charged on Dec. 24, 2015.
The case was investigated by the Long Beach Police Department.
