US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his South Korean counterpart Kang Kyung-wha held emergency talks on Wednesday following North Korea’s cancellation of ministerial talks with Seoul and threats to pull out of the Trump-Kim summit scheduled to be held in Singapore on June 12, Aljazeera reports.
The US State Department confirmed to Al Jazeera on Thursday that the call took place between Pompeo and Kang.
“Secretary Pompeo and the Foreign Minister Kang of South Korea had the opportunity to speak last evening by phone, and we continue to coordinate closely.”
The U.S. intends to maintain military pressure on North Korea to ensure America engages the Kim Jong-un regime from a “position of strength” to achieve significant steps towards the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, a top Pentagon official indicated on Tuesday.

U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged on Wednesday it was unclear if his summit with North Korea would go ahead after Pyongyang threatened to pull out of the unprecedented meeting, a move that could deny him a potentially major foreign policy achievement.
North Korea threw into doubt the June 12 summit between its leader Kim Jong Un and Trump on Wednesday, saying it might not attend if Washington continues to demand it unilaterally abandon its nuclear arsenal. North Korea also called off talks with South Korea scheduled for Wednesday, blaming U.S.-South Korean military exercises, Reuters reports.
Washington will still insist that North Korea gives up its nuclear weapons despite the threat to cancel the historic summit, said Trump.
