In an embarrassing display for the entire city of Detroit, a group of undercover Detroit police offers were posing as drug dealers only to have another group of undercover police officers attempt to arrest them. This mishap led to a full-on street brawl between more than two dozen police officers, according to local news affiliate WJBK-TV.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig stated of the incident –
“This is probably one of the most embarrassing things I’ve seen in this department. They appeared to be like Keystone cops.”
The incident began when two special ops officers from Detroit’s 12th Precinct were operating what officers term as a “push off” off Andover near Seven Mile. Two undercover officers pretending to be dope dealers were waiting for customers to approach and purchase or attempt to purchase. The officers would then arrest the would-be potential buyers and seize their vehicles.
However, instead of potential customers what the undercover officers from the 12th precinct got were special ops officers from the 11th Precinct. Not realizing both were fellow Detroit police officers, they ordered the undercover officers to the ground. Here’s where it gets…..interesting.
The rest of the special ops team from the 12th precinct then arrives on the scene. These officers begin to raid a house located in the 19300 block of Andover, however rather than communicating with one another and actually fighting crime? The officers allowed the situation to devolve into a melee, throwing punches and drawing their firearms while homeowners stood and watched.
Body camera footage obtained by local news affiliate WXYZ-TV shows the two groups of officers yelling, shoving, throwing punches at one another and in general making a spectacle.
Now Internal Affairs is involved and each officer involved is being investigated in an attempt to determine how the two precincts got into a turf war between the two precincts making potentially fatal errors. The Wayne County prosecutors office is now investigating to determine if criminal charges will be filed against the officers as well.
Those in the area know that this is an area known for constant drug activity and many residents have expressed doubts that it will ever stop. Well, it seems the Detroit Police are trying to do just that….though perhaps they may be trying just a little too hard.
